Inflation is here
Market Commentary For Tuesday, June 27, 2017
Last Friday, Stats Canada released the Consumer Price Index for the month of May. The inflation index (CPI) is considered a lagging index given that it is essentially two months behind. The official increase in the CPI measure for inflation from May 2016 to May 2017 was 1.3%. I think you and I realize that the cost to live has risen a lot more over the last year than a mere 1.3%. My property taxes alone are up nearly 5% and don’t even get me started on food costs. Will the Bank of Canada be forced to raise interest rates to fight this inflation, or will we continue to be told that inflation is non-existent?
